Set off from the town of Cernay, nestled at the foot of the Vosges Mountains in eastern France, and embark on a cycling adventure that does one of the region’s most iconic climbs: the Grand Ballon. This loop isn’t just a ride—it’s a deep dive into the natural beauty and alpine charm of the Vosges, with every turn offering stunning vistas and a true sense of mountain serenity.

The ascent to the Grand Ballon begins gently, rolling through open countryside before the gradient starts to bite. Reaching 1,424 meters, the Grand Ballon is the highest point in the Vosges, and the views from the summit are absolutely breathtaking. On a clear day, the Alps appear on the distant horizon, while the Alsace plain stretches out far below. The climb is long but steady, with gradients that demand effort without ever becoming brutal — a perfect challenge for any keen road cyclist.

After a thrilling descent from the summit, the route rolls on through the heart of the Vosges, taking in quiet valleys and postcard-worthy villages. The second major climb of the day, the Col de Bramont, offers a different kind of beauty: more intimate and forested, with less elevation but just as much charm. The road here is peaceful and less trafficked, providing a welcome contrast to the grandeur of the Grand Ballon. This section is a chance to recover, breathe deeply, and enjoy the soothing rhythm of the forest all around you.

As you descend from the Col de Bramont and make your way back to Cernay, you’ll realize you’ve just completed one of the most rewarding cycling loops in the region. With over 100 kilometers of riding and a healthy dose of climbing, it’s a route that combines physical challenge with sheer scenic pleasure.
