Siem Reap, the gateway to the ancient temples of Angkor, offers cyclists a unique opportunity to explore one of the world's most magnificent archaeological sites on two wheels. The region is home to the legendary Angkor Wat and dozens of other stunning temples that showcase the grandeur of the Khmer Empire.

Cycling through the Angkor Archaeological Park allows you to experience these ancient wonders at your own pace, away from the crowds of tour buses. The flat terrain makes it accessible to cyclists of all levels, while the rich history and stunning architecture provide an unforgettable backdrop for your ride.

Beyond the temples, Siem Reap offers a vibrant cultural scene, excellent cuisine, and warm hospitality. The region's tropical climate and relatively flat landscape make it an ideal destination for cycling enthusiasts looking to combine cultural exploration with physical activity.

Why it works for cycling: The roads are in good shape, and despite being arrow-straight, drivers don't speed and give you space. Most loops have cycle tracks next to the main roads. The traffic is mostly tourism-related, so drivers are used to cyclists. The terrain is flat - the real draw is the hundreds of temples, not challenging climbs. You can take your time and visit temples that tour buses skip, experiencing the peace of being alone in an ancient temple with no schedule to keep.

Practical Information

Temple Dress Code: You need to cover up to enter the temples - shoulders and knees. Don't wear jeans (I learned this the hard way). The heat and humidity are intense, so lightweight, breathable clothing that covers you is the way to go.

Alternative Transportation: If you need a break from cycling or want deeper insights, consider booking a day with Kim, the Tuk Tuk Lady. She's Siem Reap's first female tuk-tuk driver and comes highly recommended.

Siem Reap experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The best time to visit for cycling is during the dry season (November - February), when temperatures are more moderate (25-30°C) and rainfall is minimal. This period offers the most comfortable cycling conditions with clear skies and lower humidity.

The hot season (March - May) brings high temperatures (30-35°C) and can be challenging for cycling, especially during midday. Early morning rides are essential during this period to avoid the intense heat.

The wet season (June - October) sees heavy rainfall and high humidity, making cycling more difficult. However, the temples are less crowded during this time, and the landscape is lush and green. If cycling during the wet season, be prepared for sudden downpours and plan your rides around the weather.
