This route tackles the biggest climb that the Algarve has to offer – the Fóia climb in the Serra de Monchique. Beginning in the western side of the Algarve, Monchique is fondly known as ‘The Garden’ of the region. This Monchique cycling route is short and sweet but takes in some spectacular views around Fóia and the Vicentine Coast.
The Route
At 51 kilometers with 975 meters of elevation gain, this route offers a challenging but rewarding cycling experience. The route includes the famous Fóia climb, which reaches the highest point in the Algarve at 902 meters above sea level. This is the same climb featured in the professional cycling race, the Tour of Algarve, but here you can tackle it at your own pace.
The road winds its way up through eucalyptus and cork oak forests, providing shade during the warmer months. As you climb higher, the views become increasingly spectacular, with panoramic vistas over the Algarve coastline and the surrounding countryside.
Why It’s Special
This route takes you up the famous Fóia climb that professional cyclists tackle during the Tour of Algarve. While the pros race up at breakneck speeds, you can enjoy the climb at your own pace, taking in the stunning scenery that Monchique has to offer.
The area is known as ‘The Garden’ of the Algarve for good reason – the landscape is lush and green, with traditional villages dotted throughout the mountains. The route offers spectacular views of Fóia and the Vicentine Coast, making it one of the most scenic rides in the region.
The Summit
At the top of Fóia, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views. On a clear day, you can see across the entire Algarve region, from the Atlantic coast to the rolling hills of the interior. There’s a viewing platform and a small café at the summit where you can rest and take in the scenery before the rewarding descent.
Best Time to Ride
The Algarve’s mild climate means this route can be enjoyed year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most pleasant temperatures. Early morning rides are recommended during the summer months to avoid the heat, while winter provides crisp, clear days perfect for climbing.
